Free fighting martial arts

mixed martial artsThe art of free fighting originated thousands of years ago and has been practiced since eons ago. Fighting can be classified loosely into free fighting or freeform fighting and armed fighting.

Free fighting as the name suggests is unarmed fighting using bare hands and the body as a weapon. Armed fighting basically makes use of any weapon known to man in fighting and not surprisingly an advantage might be conferred to those using more advanced weapons. Henceforth, some might argue that in order to carry out a fair fight, either free fighting is used or the weapons are standardized.

Why fight you might ask?

Well I would agree anytime and wholeheartedly that peace is always better. However, the world is not exactly a very rosy place and there are times when you might need to defend yourselves in the face of threats against you and/or your family. In such events, self defense is but mandatory.

Henceforth, you should always view fighting as something that is only carried out if necessary and never be an unnecessary aggressor. In order to win a fight, you should know the art of free fighting or self defense.

Why free fighting?

Free fighting refers to unarmed combat and a proficient student of the art can overwhelm the opponent in the face of weapons that put him at a disadvantage. And not everyone carries a weapon around unless it is his job to do so! Hence, self defense techniques are often taught in the form of free fighting.

There are various forms of free fighting available. Taekwando, karate, kickboxing, boxing, muay-thai, Silat, aikido, judo, wrestling, gongfu, capoeira, krav maga and jiujitsu are some of the more known forms of free fighting. There are differing camps on which is the best free fighting technique. Each form is different though and has their own advantages and disadvantages.

Free fighting competitions has always been done with opponents using the same free fighting art. However with increasing argument to discover which form of free fighting is the best, there is increasing calls to allow for the ultimate free fighting competition where any form of free fighting is allowed. It is with this in mind that mixed martial arts or MMA was born. And the ultimate fighting championship or UFC was created to allow fighters practicing any form of free fighting to compete against each other.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has grown from obscurity to a multimillion dollar event with numerous sponsorships and famous celebrity fighters. Most of the fighters in the UFC do not practice a single free fighting art only and two free fighting techniques if not more has become a necessity rather than a luxury. Most UFC fighters or Mixed Martial Art practitioner for that matter uses two forms of free fighting as a base. One is used in stand up fighting whereas the other is for ground fighting which is common when both fighters go to the ground. The most common base combination is Muay Thai for stand up fighting and Brazilian jiujitsu for ground fighting. Other combinations include boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and judo. There are other combinations available and some mixed martial artists know as many as twenty free fighting forms!
